The SBA Underwriter supports the Bank’s SBA lending growth by conducting independent credit analysis, underwriting, and recommending SBA loan proposals. This job ensures all underwriting choices fit with SBA SOPs, Bank credit policy, and regulatory standards, while balancing prudent risk management and relationship-driven lending.
The SBA Underwriter collaborates with SBA Business Development Officers, Loan Processing, Credit Administration, and senior management to ensure effective loan structuring, quick decision-making, and a high-quality portfolio. This position is suitable for a credit expert with sound judgment, risk awareness, and exceptional documentation skills, as well as a desire to work in a collaborative atmosphere that supports small businesses and promotes long-term loan development.

Qualifications and Eligibility Criteria 

  • A minimum of 3-5 years of commercial credit underwriting experience is required, with direct SBA underwriting expertise being desired.
  • Working understanding of SBA SOP rules, eligibility criteria, and loan structures.
  • Excellent financial analysis abilities, including cash flow and worldwide debt service analysis.
  • Capability to independently analyze credit risk and offer sound underwriting recommendations.
  • The ideal applicant will have prior experience underwriting SBA loans in a community or regional banking setting, as well as working understanding of SBA loan acquisition, guarantee, and post-closing procedures. This post requires a credit professional with experience in a growth-oriented, risk-disciplined lending environment. They should be able to balance relationship-driven lending with solid credit judgment and regulatory standards.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • SBA Credit Underwriting and Analysis

The SBA Underwriter is in charge of underwriting SBA loan requests, primarily for the SBA 7(a), Express, and associated programs, in compliance with SBA Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), Bank credit policy, and regulatory guidelines. This position conducts thorough financial analysis, which includes cash flow, global debt service coverage, liquidity, leverage, collateral adequacy, and overall payback capacity. The Underwriter examines borrower and guarantor financial statements, tax returns, company plans, predictions, and pertinent industry trends, as well as assessing management expertise, business viability, and operational hazards. Credit memoranda are well-structured and include risk evaluations and recommendations for approval or refusal, ensuring good credit decisions. The function entails writing credit memoranda for post-closing loan servicing operations, maintaining portfolio quality, and ensuring regulatory compliance.

  • SBA Compliance and Documentation

The SBA Underwriter ensures that all underwriting activities adhere to current SBA Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), eligibility requirements, and documentation standards, while actively identifying and mitigating SBA eligibility, credit, and structural risks early in the underwriting process. This job works closely with SBA Loan Processing to ensure loan files are complete, correct, and audit-ready for SBA purchase and servicing requirements. The underwriter also helps SBA loan closings by analyzing final loan terms and conditions to ensure compatibility with approved credit structures and underwriting determinations.

 

  • Risk Management and Portfolio Quality

The SBA Underwriter aggressively identifies emerging risks within the SBA loan portfolio and escalates issues as needed to ensure strong credit control. This function contributes to continuing portfolio management operations, such as yearly credit evaluations, covenant monitoring, and ensuring risk ratings are accurate and timely. The Underwriter also supports with internal audits, loan reviews, and regulatory examinations connected to SBA lending, as well as the ongoing improvement of SBA underwriting procedures and credit policy upgrades to improve portfolio performance and operational discipline.

  • Collaboration & Relationship Support

The SBA Underwriter collaborates with SBA Business Development Officers to draft bankable, SBA-compliant loan requests and offer credit intelligence early in the deal process. While acting as a trusted resource for lending staff, the underwriter provides clear credit advice while preserving sufficient independence in underwriting judgments. This job contributes to deal discussions, pipeline meetings, and pre-screening conversations, communicating underwriting judgments in a clear, constructive, and professional manner to ensure strong relationships, timely execution, and successful credit results.
